My name is Megan Hanney, I'm a Senior Strategist who makes places with purpose. I recently finished my Masters of Urban Design as I transition away from Advertising and Marketing roles into solving more urban challenges.
Why do some places succeed when others fail? And why do some places suck?
They don't have to, but society is used to it. Beige McHouses, parks that are a dead patch of grass, shopping centers that only have half their tenancies filled, or towns with a Main Street that is lifeless.
It makes sense that the places people want to visit are the same places that succeed.
People visit places that have meaning, to them, to society and to their friends when they post about it on socials. They want to work in the same neighborhood, they want to live nearby and they want to revisit again and again.
What does a place with meaning look like?
A place with a story, with a shared culture or activity. It could be historic and connected to nostalgia over the decades like Mrs. Macquarie's chair - not only a great story, but also the best place to see fireworks, the summer cinema series, to sit and watch the boats roll in, but also a landmark and a must-see when you are in Sydney.
And it is a simple stone chair with a story that is for tourists and locals, alike.

But it doesn’t have to be a tourist attraction to be a success.
I create strategic plans and recommendations based on research and critical thinking to inform ideas to help Councils, Governments, developers, and not-for-profits build places with purpose. The place may or may not currently exist.

If you are worried about getting a DA I’ll....create a vision.
If no one visits your place I’ll .... make it a destination.
If your project hasn’t got any sales I’ll....build you a campaign
If the community hates your development...I'll find out why. I’ll find a way to address their concerns and then I’ll create a vision, make it a destination and build you a campaign.
